Leveraging Social Media to Drive Equity & Influence
TIMELINE:
-
August 2020 – May 2022: Served as the organization’s sole social media manager.
-
August 2022: Completed a special project with the organization.
INTRODUCTION: During my tenure as the sole social media manager for 50/50 Women on Boards, I played a pivotal role in supporting the organization’s growth and rebranding efforts. This period marked significant milestones, including surpassing the goal of 20% women on Russell 3000 boards and the rebranding to 50/50 Women on Boards. While the success of these achievements was a collaborative effort, my strategic insights and recommendations—such as establishing a DEI advisory board—contributed to ensuring the organization’s messaging remained authentic, inclusive, and impactful.
CLIENT OVERVIEW: 50/50 Women on Boards, formerly 2020 Women on Boards, is a global education and advocacy campaign focused on achieving gender parity on corporate boards. After surpassing its initial goal of 20% women on Russell 3000 boards, the organization rebranded in 2021 to reflect its expanded mission of advocating for 50% women on boards globally (as of today, women hold 30.2% of Russell 3000 company board seats).

A Noteworthy Key Achievement From Above — Strategic Focus During Challenging Times: During a time of heightened social discourse, the organization remained focused on its mission and elevating its key events rather than directly engaging with every complex social issue on social media. Recognizing the shifting digital landscape, I observed a growing need for authenticity and inclusivity in messaging. In response, I recommended the creation of a DEI advisory board led by BIPOC and AAPI voices to provide guidance and oversight for communications.
While this strategy was adopted, fully integrating it into their practices was still an ongoing process during my time there. The board’s formation, however, was a meaningful step toward ensuring that future messaging aligned with the organization’s commitment to equity and representation.
